To make easier to find your way in Playa del Carmen, we have divided the town into different areas and neighborhoods. If you’re familiar with Playa this will help you pick the area you would like to stay in. For those that are new to town we’ve made a short description of the main features of the different areas. Don’t forget that Playa, especially the tourist area, is still relatively small and almost anything can be reached on foot. Most of the time, the division between areas is nothing more than half a block or just a few steps!
Playa del Carmen Coco Beach – the area North of Calle 38, which is a newer, quieter, more residential area. Beaches are wider and emptier than downtown with less hustle and bustle, fewer stores, and smaller restaurants and bars. This is an area that’s more reminiscent of “old Playa” but rapidly changing.
Playa del Carmen downtown – the area between Calle 10 and 26 is where you will find lots of boutiques, bars, restaurants, coffee shops, beach clubs, and hopping nightlife. This is Playa del Carmen at its best, and it is why we love Playa.
Playa del Carmen Mamitas Beach – located between Calle 26 and 38, is the home of “Little Italy”. Wide stretches of beaches with the famous Mamitas and Kool beach clubs. This is definitely Playa’s most popular area right now.
Playacar Phase I – located South of Avenida Juarez, this is the gated beach side community adjacent to Playa, and it is within easy walking distance of Fifth Avenue. Playacar Phase I is quiet, residential, with mostly larger villas and houses. The beach here is beautiful, wide, and generally quiet, with no public beach clubs. During windy days you can see many kite surfers here.
Playacar Phase II – is a large residential area built surrounding a beautiful 18 hole golf course. It’s a great area for running, biking, walking, bird watching and more. Playa’s downtown is easily accessible depending on where you’re staying here, but having a (rental) car can be convenient in this area. There is less traffic than in town and parking is easy.
